Evaluating Mental Health and Wellbeing of Postgraduate Researchers: Prevalence and Contributing Factors

Abstract High rates of mental ill-health in postgraduate researchers (PGRs) represent a significant barrier to life satisfaction and academic success. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge about the extent origins health problems PGRs UK. The current study addresses this gap by investigating prevalence provenance anxiety, depression, sleep problems, subjective wellbeing, suicide behaviours An online survey (N = 479) was used measure outcomes assess their relationships with demographic, trait variables, policy, social support. We found high low levels wellbeing sample. Factors associated poorer were female non-binary gender, non-heterosexual identity, maladaptive perfectionism, workaholism being 5 th year or above. Resilience, adaptive higher support positive evaluations progress preparation, departmental climate, supervisory relationship more outcomes. findings contribute new symptoms UK, implying that institutional efforts improve PGR should include strategies promote equality, diversity, resilience, integration, support, work-life balance PGRs.
